Okay, ... Here's what my sponsor told me ... He said that, usually, once I STOP ACTING on ANY character defect, God will remove it just like He did with the drugs and alcohol use ...

When I had a particular 'character defect' I couldn't get rid of, he said for some reason, you are holding on to this defect and are not yet willing to let it go ... he said I want you to go home and stay there praying to God and meditating until me and God could resolve it ... Doing what he said, I went home and I prayed and cried, and prayed and cried til I was exhausted ... When I woke up the next morning, that thing was gone ... and I never had to pull this defect of character back into my life ...

When the mind and body are willing and the plea to God sincere, then He'll remove any defect of character you need to be rid of ...

Believe it or don't ... But it works for me ... and it WILL work for you IF you possess 'total honesty' in your 'thinking' ... The way I was 'thinking' in the past HAD to be discarded and I had to learn how to 'think' in a sober life and environment ... YOU don't have to do this, IF you want to continue to get what you've always got ...

It has been my experience, and it may be because I am a slow learner, that I have turned a defect of character over to my Higher Power with a willingness for His Help to remove it. It has gone away, and I was grateful BUT here was the problem: The sucker came back again. My sponsor told me, do you think you only get to work on your defects one time. This is a one day at a time program. A long-timer who had 25 years sober at the time shared at a meeting. I have 13 defects of character, I have them contained in 13 barrels. The problem is that I only have 12 lids. One of those characters keep popping up and I never know which one it is going to be in today.

Thought he was pulling a funny but found out that it was very true.

Hey Jo, ... This is so true ... Occasionally one of those ole buggers will try to pop back up and ruin your day ... BUT, as long as I recognize it, don't act on it, and remember that we can only live 'one day at a time', then it's easily held at bay ... I'm able to say to myself, just like taking a drink, that I can do this, just for today, and go on about my business ...

Oh, the barrel analogy is very good, I might have to borrow it! ....

LOL! The thinking and acting is what I call the difference between a defect of character and a shortcoming. I can think negative, but if I act out on it, then I am being less than what my God would have me be in today. I always use my ex-husband as an example. If I am sitting in a room, and I am expecting him to arrive, I would probably think, "Oh I wish a$$hole wasn't going to be here. When he walks into the room and I say to him, "How are you a$$hole?" that would be a definite shortcoming. Thoughts are bad because we often follow them up with action. Recovery is being given that moment to think before you speak.
