AA Spiritual Readings
What do members of Alcoholics Anonymous read for spiritual growth? What can be called their AA Spiritual readings? What can be called A.A. Spiritual Literature?

There are many answers--some misreporting the facts. Some failing to state which A.A. period is involved in the question. Some omitting important literature and reading. And here are suggestions for getting your information straight.:1:

For me, anything that is good for the soul. Soul food comes in many forms. When in doubt, there is always the Big Book. A lot of people I know like the 24 Hour A Day book. I have seen longtimers with elastic bands around their copy, it is their mini-Bible.

I know that no matter what book I pick up, if I say a prayer over it, and I am sincere, and open it and read the passage my eyes fall on, the answer will be there.

One day, I had the radio on. I seldom listen to the words, just listen to the music. This one day, I heard the words of two songs and they were exactly what I needed to here. If I am open to it, the food for my body, mind and spirit is always there if I am open to receiving.

I have had Just For Today but gave away the books that I bought to sponsees. At the moment, I have The Language of Letting Go by Melodie Beattie, In God's Care by Karen Casey (Spirituality in Recovery), Thoughts from the Seat of the Soul and Thoughts from the Heart of the Soul by Gary Zukav, The Yearbook of Love and Wisdom by Celia Haddon. Al-Anon's Courage to Change, As Bill Sees It, AA Big Book, and my Bible. My prized posession is a book called The Meaning of Prayer by Henry Emmerson Fosdick. It is a small black book that my Aunt Beatrice had that my Aunt Marion passed on to me. My Aunt died at the age of 15 when my aunt Marion was 5 years old. My Aunt Beatrice was given the book in 1920 and the book was published in 1918. Her understanding and insight into what she read is awesome and a very cherished gift.

I gave my AA 12 & 12 away to a sponsee along with two sets of NA literature that I bought. Now that things are online, I have access to what I need. I do have an Al-Anon 12 & 12. I have on order, Melody Beattie's book "Finding Your Way Home." I had it from the library many years ago and never finished it. I got the feeling that it is something that I need in today. Whether it is for myself or to pass onto someone else, or both, I am anxious to hear from Cole's to say it has arrived in the store.

I had my own Bible for years. I can't remember what happened to it. I have my Aunt Violet's Bible, so it is another treasure. It is called the Red Letter Edition, has a brown cover and Concordance for old and new Testaments. I can not find a date in it, although she has her family tree in it. She was married to my Uncle Lester. Perhaps when I got her Bible, I gave mine away to someone or I just lost it in my many moves over the years.

As a woman once shared at a meeting, "I read all the self-help books I could get my hands on, but when I came back to AA, I did a Big Book study and found there everything I had been trying to find outside of AA. Whether it is the Big Book or the Bible, that prayer always works. I truly believe that AA was divinely inspired.
