I "borrowed" this topic from another group ... thought it might be good to bring it here as well. If you are struggling, it can be so tempting to try this avenue.
Even though it says NON alcohol ... that definitely is not the case - there is still a certain amount of alcohol ... I know ... I tried them very early in recovery ... please stay away from them. It is just too dangerous ... what's to say that the next time you go to buy some that your hand won't just happen to accidently slip and pick up the real thing? That is what came close to happening with me and it just isn't worth giving up what I have worked so hard for.

The Mckinnon Unit in Sydney (short term detox) advised my first sponsor not to muck around with anything that could be a substitute for alcohol - he stayed away from all types of drinks even advising me not to drink coke and to be very careful of rich fruit cakes that may have alcohol in them.? I remember at my first job in recovery I told my friend I was a member and when we went out on office functions she became my "taster" if anything tasted remotely of grog to her she told me and I didn't eat or drink it.? The only thing I can say about this is "when in doubt don't".
God Bless us all

I was taught that nonalcoholic beer and wine were for non-alcoholics.

About 14 years ago,my first wife detested alcohol, and me being an alcoholic,,found a way to drink in her presence without her knowing. I told her that I missed the taste of having a beer and wanted to start buying non alcoholic alcohol. She was ok with this,so I would buy a six pack of o-douls beer, and a couple 40's. Then when she was in another room,I would proceed to pour out the non beer down the sink, and pour the 40's into the non-beer empty glasses, then put all the caps back on the bottles(six pack),then put them in the fridge,so when ever I wanted a beer I would have a beer sitting right next to her and she never questioned me. At first she told me. "Man Mike that stuff smells like real beer!" And I was like,,,"I know huh!" Its crazy how manipulative we alcoholics can be. Were experts at it.

Non-Alcoholic beer/wine, always find this topic a real joke.? Been sober over 35 years and have never wanted to play alcoholic with lets-pretend beer or wine.? If there really is no alcohol content, why would an alcoholic want to drink it; for the alcohol, for the taste or for the appearance of drinking socially?? Please excuse me for a moment while I try to quit laughing.? Why bother playing Let?s Pretend, if you really want to drink, our hats are off to you.? Go ahead and get it over with, but if you know how it will end up, we might suggest to give it a bit of restraint.? God supplies the miracle ? we only have to supply a decision, to make No Decision, until we pause and say a prayer for help.?
Reminds me of one guy we put into Rosary Hall that had slipped on NyQuil on the rocks, yea right!? He not only wanted to play Let?s Pretend but he decided to lie to himself about it.? Unfortunately he could not lie to his broken drinking gadget.? Of all the wonders of modern medicine, as far as I am aware, there are still No Replacement Drinking Gadgets available.? There is only one to a customer, if it is broke ? it is broke period.? That is why we have the twelve steps; they are for folks like me with broken drinking gadgets.? All I have to do is do them.? Oh we might want to stay in dry places with dry people and by the way, quit playing Let?s Pretend.? Love to all, Gramps.?
PS ? ?Let?s Pretend? was a children?s radio program broadcast during the forties.?
