Hi all! Jenn here, alcoholic and addict. I don't know much about this website but I am seeking help. I went into rehab about a year ago. I went back out for a very short time and two months ago I ended up in a car accident breaking a bone in one end in 4 places as well as my collar bone. Ended up on pain pills and am now realizing that I will take anything that gives me a buzz...including cough syrup while I was waiting on renewal of pain meds. Please help as I am trying but just can't seem to understand this "worm" that wants to eat me alive!!!

Hello Jenna, welcome to AASL. Hope to see you around this site more often. The people here can offer great strength, hope and experience and they will in time reply to all of your questions, just keep asking.
A number of years ago, my 'no nonsense doctor' told me that I was a 'substance abuser'. In other words, I would use anything to alter my present state of mind - booze, pot, speed, prescription medication, over the counter medication, other peoples medication, cough syrup, mouth wash - I could go on and on.
I was advised to get a 'thorough knowledge of my condition' by attending regular AA meetings, approaching a sponsor to help guide me through the twelve steps of recovery, and above all by not drinking or using mind altering substances for one day at a time.
I have found that I need to have certain disciplins in my life today as I am by nature very undisciplined. In order to be able to maintain any kind of emotional and spiritual balance at all I need to - attend AA on a regular basis, speak to or contact (this site is a good suppliment) another alcoholic on a daily basis to keep me focused on my condition, and above all stay clean and sober on a daily basis.
It can be done! We are living proof of that.
Be great to see you around this site in future.
Anguss.
Hi, Jenn! Welcome!!
Glad you are here!
Hoping you will continue to seek help for your recovery! Me, if I take ANY substance, I start craving it. I crave physically and/or mentally, and can't seem to stop, on my own resources, unaided.
So I was helped/enabled to stop, and I am so grateful! Now, today, I have God I can turn to, I go to AA, I do the things I know and have been taught to do, in order to stay clean and sober.
It sounds as though you have been through some pretty rough things. They used to tell me that the elevator keeps on going down (and getting worse), until I stop and get off. that used to upset me, but I see it's true, today.
So that's why I say I hope you will keep seeking recovery. Here is a good supplement to my AA program.
Going to either AA, or maybe NA or one of the other recovery programs would help a lot...doing the things Anguss suggested.
It's scary, starting, but we're talking about svaing your life, too.
Hope you'll keep sharing, and sending a big hug!
Love,
Sam
