Hello all,

I am new here, and am not an alcoholic - however, I would be really grateful for any advice you can give me on my situation.

I have been on a few dates with a guy. He had been very distant in the past week, and last night told me he has just committed to a month's residential rehab for alcoholism in a few weeks time. I did not know he was alcoholic, none of our dates have involved alcohol, and he is currently not drinking. He has seen several counsellors in the past, and feels now is time for rehab. He says he does not drink when feeling down - more that he binges when excited, which leads to drinking the next morning, and lunchtime, and so on.

Anyway, he basically said he doesn't know whether he should get involved with me further - due to the rehab. He said he would still like to see me, but it's a weird time, and he thinks the treatment would state he couldn't enter a new relationship right now. I said it was his call, and i understood it was a difficult time for him - but that i could deal with it. We didn't come to a conclusion - just left it that we would see each other soon.

I don't know where to go from here. I am pretty much teetotal, so I wouldn't be a bad influence in any way - if that is of any relevance. I do like him and really want to see him some more - but I don't want to add any more stress for him. I'm wondering whether I should tell him we should just be friends until he is in a different place. or whether to say I like him, and if he feels the same, I am happy to go with the flow for the time being.

Can anyone give me their thoughts?

Thanks so much.

As u suggested,, Let's just be friends until ur in a different place. Sounds like great advice to me . The author was very sensible and down to earth.

Dear Cleo,

You might also try to visit the link on this site for Al Anon, Al Ateen. There might be some help there.
