I was shown by ppl more educated then me that there is a hyphen in step one. Acording to the dictionary that hyphen means continuation of thought. The unmanagability that our founders were refering to was the power less condition our alcoholism places us in while drinking or when not drinking. There are not 2 parts to step one as I was told by many in AA step one is one thing and one thing only being powerless. When our founders wrote this they werent refering to some of us not being able to show up on time for work or to pay our bills on time, or speeding down the road and being inconsiderate toward other drivers on the road. there are plenty of non alkis that have those very same problems. What they were refering to goes back to the 2 questions my sponsor asked me 6yrs ago outside of a meeting hall. He said "Dave when you start to drink can you predict with any certainty while drinking when you will stop yes or no?" . By the way my sponsors have always asked me yes or no questions to keep things simple. To that question i answered no. He then asked Dave what about when your not drinking you have stoped on purpose do you have any ability to predict with any certainty when you will start drinking again yes or no? " Now in hind sight I could see the many vain attempts i had stoped but without the abilty to stay stoped i always drank again so for me the 2nd quesiton was also no. He then told me acordin to the big book the first ? deals with the allergy of which by answering no to i was powerless over alcohol while drinking it and more important was the answer to ? 2 of which i also answered no to. By answer no to ? 2 I was powerless over alcohol while i wasnt drinking it so it didnt matter wether I was starting or stoping that was variable the constant for both was being powerless. And what that meant was that alcohol at one time my servant my best friend was now playing god over me. i had finally been beaten by alcohol and in that defeated condtion I longed for death till i was given the solution outlined in the first 164 pages of the big book. Now over 6yrs have passed and i have always had a sponsor and many spiritual advisors. i was shown to have a home group that i need to be at every week so i can do service there and my sponsees know on wed night im always there. i was shown how to sponsor others to help them also to be recovered how to get on this path and to help others. and by doing that I could have my alcoholism removed which is what being a recovered alcoholic is look at the first page of the big book where it says that "the story of how many thousand of men and women have recovered from alcoholism" the over 250 promises in the big book that show me what my progress should be. Having had the spiritual awakening means I am no longer powerless over alcohol god has removed the problem so i didnt have to fight it look at the pg 85 10th step promises. By this time the problem has been removed. There are so many things that are facts of exp from our founders when I follow the same directions they become my own exp and that no one will ever be able to take away from me.
