STEP THREE

WE ADMITTED WE WERE POWERLESS OVER ALCOHOL--

THAT OUR LIVES HAD BECOME UNMANAGEABLE

“Being convinced, we were at Step 3, which is that we decided to turn our will [our thinking] and our life [our actions] over to God as we understood Him. Just what do we mean by that, and just what do we do?

To do this there are more requirements to be met. Read ps. 60-62. The Book tells us the requirements of the 3rd Step are:

1) We have to be convinced that our life, run on own self-will, can hardly be a success.

2) We have to quit trying to run our life and self-will. We have to quit playing God. Why? It doesn’t work.

3) We have to “let God be God” and let Him run our lives.

STEP THREE

MADE A DECISION TO TURN OUR WILL AND LIFE

OVER TO THE CARE OF GOD AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM

Step 3 is so easy it is confusing. And it becomes more so when discussed at meetings for this reason. The Step says make a decision, nothing more or less and that decision is based on Steps 1 and 2 as summarized on p. 60 the Big Book, the a, b, c’s. So the decision begins to be carried out when Step 4 is started, continued with 5 and 6 and then we acting differently in Step 7 by practicing the opposite of our defects as stated on ps. 67 and 69 (selfish, dishonest, self-seeking, frightened, inconsiderate). That is letting go (acting differently) with God’s direction and strength in my life, not our own. We then continue on, a day at a time to practice this, Step 10 for today which molds our tomorrow.

This step is a challenge to each of us, personally. It suggests a decision: to let go and let god take a hand in our affairs, which he can do only if we surrender our self-will and turn our lives over to his care.

For all of us, the day came when there was no longer a choice.

To succeed action was required on our part. We are at a rallying point and if we truly accepted and absorbed the first two propositions we are now ready for a major decision and that is am ( I ) ready to turn my life over to the care of god as I understood Him. A key distinction here is it ( I ) that accept this proposition or (We), families, doctors or authority's.
Sincerity is very important at this point and if I can truly say it was (Me) that made the decision instead of (We) then one can truly say they are ready for the true path to freedom.
