OLD TIMER'S PRAYER
Lord, keep me from the habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from the craving to straighten out everybody's affairs. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details - give me wings to get to the point. I ask for the grace to listen to the tales of others pains. Help me to endure them in patience. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains - they are increasing and my love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet. I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all - but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends in the end.
Thank you so very much for sharing this hit the spot for me

i really needed this prayer today...im speaking tomorrow night at a meeting in so cal, and my insecurities have been having a party in my head for 2 days now...my sponser continues to remind me that my head should be used for entertainment purposes ONLY, that i should get out of there as soon as possible, but its sooo comfortable....unfortunatly when im 'thinking' it stops me from being there for the kids- i have no room in there to play games, take a walk, or just be with them...i will read this poem today whenever i get into tommorow...any advice onhow to stay focused on others, when im obsessed with self? i guess, just take action...i will now get up, and go take some action for them...simple, i guess. please say a prayer for me on sunday night, that i honor you all and the program that was so freely given to me. peace, kelly

Kelly, just tell it like it is - what it was like, what happened and what it's like now. People like to hear the truth, especially newcomers.
Good luck and have a good one.

Kelly,
It's so easy to get obsessed with speaking, I know! What I found was that for myself, the reason I got so wrapped up about it was because I wanted it to be so perfect, I wanted so badly to be able to say something profound, I wanted to change people's lives, I wanted it to be great......
See the common thread? "I want..." Yikes!
Trust that your HP will make sure that what needs to be said, will get said. That your HP will make sure that if your speak reaches out to someone in a profound way, that it will be heard by the person that most needs to hear it. That your HP will make sure that even though you might feel as if you looked like a fool up there, those who most needed a particular message got it and it changed their lives.
Say a prayer, let it go, and let HP handle the speechwriting :)
Anguss is dead-on, too -- the truth is what folks want to know. It's all about how you did it.
Be well, and know I'm thinking of you and hoping for the very best for you this evening!!

Thank you for this post. I had been looking for it. PatsyD has posted it some years back, and I really love it dearly.
Where the heck is PatsyD. I've lost contact with her too.
I'll tell ya what is weird, that you can come to something as big as the internet and look for someone you never met, get to know them, lose them, and actually have hope to find them again.
Don't know, myself, where Patsy is.
Maybe someone else will!

I just wanted to say thankyou for the post and i loved the prayer.
What is considered an old timer?
Stay well
Mx
Hi, moralina. I don't know what would be considered an oldtimer.
Heard one guy say in a meeting that at some convention they had an oldtimer's table. Then you had to have 20 years or more. He said he couldn't wait to get his twenty years.
When he got the twenty, they had upped the requirement to thirty years.
Sure made me laugh.
